Similar to a miles-per-gallon (MPG) rating for a car, an EPS is the total energy consumption of a home for a year and the total carbon emissions associated with that energy use. These scores allow for comparison among homes in a similar way that one would compare the MPG of cars for purchase decisions. An MPG-type rating addresses current rating constraints, and it links energy efficiency improvements with a comprehensible and comparable score that reflects the energy consumption and carbon emissions profile of a home. Free things you can do to save electricity:
- Turn off lights and other appliances when they’re not in use.
- Unplug any appliances and electronic devices you rarely use.
- Set your hot water heater between 120 and 140 degrees.
- Wipe the coils on the back of your refrigerator to clear dust and lint.
- Scrape thick frost out of your freezer.
- Use one large light bulb instead of multiple small ones.
- Fill – but don’t overload – your clothes dryer.
- Use your range-top instead of the oven when you can.
- Don’t boil water in an open pan. Cover it to let heat build faster.
Free things you can do to save natural gas:
- Clean your furnace filter.
- Close heating vents and doors to unoccupied rooms.
- Open your drapes on sunny days in the winter.
- Set your hot water heater between 120 and 140 degrees.
- Lower your thermostat at night and when no one is home.
- Insulate accessible heating ducts in unheated areas.
- Close the fireplace damper.
