Similar to a miles-per-gallon (MPG) rating for a car, an EPS is the total energy consumption of a home for a year and the total carbon emissions associated with that energy use. These scores allow for comparison among homes in a similar way that one would compare the MPG of cars for purchase decisions. An MPG-type rating addresses current rating constraints, and it links energy efficiency improvements with a comprehensible and comparable score that reflects the energy consumption and carbon emissions profile of a home.
